Mike is a native of Harrisonburg, Virginia and a graduate of Harrisonburg High School.  In addition to his law degree, Mike is a Certified Public Accountant.  After law school he worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company, a national CPA firm, in their tax department in 1971 and 1972.  In 1973, Mike returned to Harrisonburg to begin his law career.  In 1985, Mike, along with Dean M. Nichols, co-founded Layman & Nichols, P.C.

Mike is a member of the legal Advisory Board of Small Business Council of America, Inc., and a Member of the American Bar Association, including the Taxation Section, Real Property Section, Probate and Trust Law Section, Labor and Employment Law Section, and Health Law Forum.  Mike is a Member of the William & Mary Law School Tax Conference Planning Committee.  He also has spoken at various local, state, and regional seminars on estate planning and qualified retirement plan matters.

Mike is a Past Chairman of the Harrisonburg Recreation Commission, Chairman of the Heritage Oaks Advisory Committee, a Member and Past Board Member of Harrisonburg Rotary Club, a Member of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Young Life Committee, Past Chairman and a Past Board of Director Member of Wingfield Ministries Inc., and a Member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Mike concentrates his practice in estate and income tax planning and estate administration matters, as well as qualified retirement plans, and representing physician and other professional practices and closely-held businesses.
